The Vetted Table… Oliver the Foodie

Miho Gastrotruck presents:

The Vetted Table by @mihogastrotruck #popup #foodie

The Vetted Table is a new food experience created by the same food truck that produces the most fantastic burgers on the street. In the spirit of trying out new things, Miho Gastrotruck, created and hosted a pop up restaurant at one of their favorite places in San Diego. The Vetted Table was held at North Park’s El Take it Easy.

El Take it Easy is located in the heart of North Park on 30th street where it meets University Ave. The restaurant is a feast for the eyes as it is full of architectural elements that give its rustic urban feel. Some of my favorite elements of El Take it Easy was the exposed ceiling where you can see the ribs of the building. Another feature that I liked was the use of the wood which to me looked like it was created from recycled wood. The character of each of the elements added to the experience.

The candle lit restaurant was buzzing with people when my buddy Dave and I arrived. We where greeted at the door by Matt and the staff for El Take it Easy. When we checked in, we both were given an envelope which contain the menu of the evening. It is the nice touches like this that adds to the experience.
And that what the whole evening was about. Miho’s Vetted Table was about creating a new experience. It’s so awesome to see that MIHO is getting into other avenues for food. From food trucks to a off the hook hotdog stand aka Stand and Deliver, MIHO at Home and now the Vetted Table. What MIHO to me is an example of doing what you are passionate and interested can lead to success. It is also good to note everyone of their endeavors are all different but all go well together.
Upon sitting Dave and I were given a amuse vouch as a pallet cleanser and like the rest of the evening a pairing. When we both sat down, we where greeted by Juan. Juan is the Mi in MIHO. We chatted for a bit. Juan was excited for the evening and you could see and hear. I only wish the best for them. Soon after our very perky sever ask us if we want to do the pairings, we decided why not and we went for it. We both knew that of we were in for the experience that we should experience every option.

While we waited for the first course to be served to us Dave and I talked about how we could possible work out a deal and start our own office space so that way we can all work together and have a space that we can create and do the work, and have a place to meet and present with clients. It discussed what part of town, how, and who we would love to have and share the space with, etc etc.

The first coarse of the dinner came out which was a summer garden salad and paired with tangled root cocktail.  The summer garden was absolutely delightful.  The special ingredient of the evening on the summer garden was the “dirt.”  Wow, the dirt was tasty for sure.  It was one of those things that you just had to try to understand.  It definately laid out the frame work for the rest of the evening.

The next coarse after the summer garden was a corn soup which was perfectedly paired with a drinked called the Veracruz.  The corn soup was served hot and fresh from the kettle and poured in front of you.  Having this done was an experience in itself.  It made the soup taste even better.  Not saying that the soup wasn’t great already.  But the soup was absolutely fantastic.  It tasted like a fresh corned just picked from the farm and served.  It was also topped with nice slice of bacon on top.  So good.

Following the Corn soap was the main dish of the evening.  The dish was called; The Mathematician and the Villian.  The dish was composed of a beef that has been stewed for over three days.  And the villian was a dish made out of octopus and vegetables.

The last dish of the evening was some Summer Fruits with Watermelon 4.0!  Wow wow wow.  This dish was absolutely a great way to end the dinner.  The summer fruits was composed of watermelon balls and baby heirloom totmaotes.  Oh many who would ever think to put the two the together but it sure was a nice combination.  Also mixed into the fruits was the some nice refreshing ice cream.  The watermelon 4.0 was a highlight and a nice way to drink the dinner way.

Overall the experience at the Vetted Table was an absolutely fun time, filled with great food, conversation, and great atomosphere.  I recommend, that if you have an nack for some food, look for Miho Gastrotruck!

The Board Meeting

Today I attended our monthly PPSDC board meeting. It was a great meeting I attend. Even after a few hours, 4 hours to exact, we were all still in on excited and still had more to discuss.
It is with groups like this that I fully believe will foster a great community and teamwork. The coolest thing about this meeting is that I am surrounded by a group of people that mean well and are thoroughly excited about what they are doing. And also they are excited for what the future may hold for the group. One of the many highlights fro the meeting was that there was discussion for extending our board positions for 2 years verses just 1. I am in favor of this because as our boss, Lori, said , in the first year we learn about what works and what doesn’t work, and then it would be in the second year that we would be rocking. With this being said that’s not to say that we are not rocking it now but sometimes it hard to do planning when you do have a good understanding the people you are serving. So that is we’re we at, at this pint of the game.
I love our board this year. I am the only guy on the board. All my fellow board members are just the most awesome women. Each of them brings something different and exciting to the table. Lori is a teacher and our President and also runs her own photography business. Kim is our Treasurer. She runs her own photography business and is a rocking woman. I like he style. Monica is our VP of the print comp. She’s a great mom and tons of fun to hang out with. Ann is our VP of Speakers. She is also a mom and runs a successful wedding business. She, Monica, and Kim form our Canadian Party. They are all wonderful women. I am glad to be part of a group that is as gunho as I am with the group.

Planning and Coffee… Oliver the Photographer, the ideamaker

Today was planning day with Hollie.  We were planning and plotting out the day that I would help her photograph her first booked wedding.  As a friend and fellow photographer I was happy to help her.  It’s cool to see a friend graduate to this level in photography.  When I first met Hollie, she didn’t know what aperture, shutter, and iso was and hot they relate to each other.  And it was after our first hang out that see made the jump to manual.  And ever since then I have watched her consistently improve and make so much progress.  She definatly has made the leap from hobbyist to professional.  This wedding that I am helping her plan will be her first booked wedding that she booked last year and it finally arrived.

The wedding will take place at the Jolla Cove area in the La Jolla Bridge clubhouse.  Hollie and I headed over to La Jolla Cove to do the planning.  However it being summer meant that there would be crowds and surely we were right.  But what made things even more interesting was that there was the La Jolla Coast Music concerts going on at the same time which ensured there was a lot of people in the park where the wedding was to take place.  So our first concern was how to make sure that Aarron and Erin would have a private imtimate wedding and we would be able to do our photography as intended.

While we where at the La Jolla Bridge club, Hollie and I worked out and reviewed the schedule to make sure that we got everything covered.  It was cool to collaborate with her.  But for myself, I wanted to make sure that she knew that it was her wedding and I was there to assist her with whatever she needed me to do to help here out.  I was more than happy to give her my opinion as long as it was ask but I wanted to make sure that I didn’t step on any toes.

After reviewing a few spots around the bridge club we headed over to the next location to do some scouting.  Since this wedding had a first look componenet, it was vitale that we found a place that would work for this momentious event.  It would be the first time that the bride and groom would see each other.  At first we thought the hotel where they were getting ready would work however we found out that there is a wedding already taking place atop the roof which we thought would be a perfect spot to do the first look.  But no worries, Hollie and I found a spot about 1/4 block away in a access walkway that was private and lovely.  This location would be ideal because it would the bride and groom the opportunity to be with each other before the ceremony and with family and friends.

So after we found this place we discovered that it was close to 4pm which is the time that Hollie needed to get back to her place so that she could head off to a birthday party.  And off we went.  Looks like we will be doing some more homework for this wedding coming up again.

After I dropped off Hollie,  I didn’t feel like heading home just yet, so I called up my friend Dave to see what he was up too.  Turns out he had a busy day at home doing some organization, cleaning, and editing.  So hearing that and me wanting something else to do after the scouting I asked if he would like to grab some coffee.  And he said sure.  So I head over to he’s place to grab him and we went to get some coffee and for me dessert.

When coffee and dessert was done I headed home to do more work and burn dvds for the HOBY kids.  I got another 14 DVD burned and ready to be mailed for the next day.  And the rest of the evening was just spent resting and relaxing before another work day ahead.

Productive & Lazy Days… Oliver the Photographer

Saturdays are one of those days usually reserved just chilling out and getting some work done.  Today it was one of those days.  I actually got up early and decided to catch up and write my Friday post.  Yes, if you are reading this you are wondering why is a Friday post being done on Saturday.  Well the truth is that I got home late from my Friday evening and I was tried that I just went to bed. So when I’m tried I usually just wait until the next day to post from the previous.

Today was productive in many sorts.  Today i got a majority of my HOBY job DVDs burned and labeled and ready for mailing to the kids.  I also got to go through some old photography work and get them reprocessed and edited per what I have learned what I can do with Photoshop and how my photography look has changed.

Other than being productive, today was also a day where laziness is okay.  I think there are days where you need to let your mind and body rest and give yourself permission to just do nothing.  When you do this you allow your body to have a rest.  Resting is needed, I think to be able to get the most out of your ideas and start fresh with new ones.  So today after lunch, I did some work on the computer and slow but surely feel asleep for a bit while I was on the computer.

The rest of the day was just spent working on the ongoing photography files that have backed up.  A lot of the photography work that I have done was put back because I had to work on the “client” work.  Get those out and sent to them so that I can get them all worked and off of the task list.  This is one of the difficulties that I have faced over the time while I’ve tried to balance my side job of photography, the day job, and the personal life.  Sometimes balancing the three of these things gets the best of me and I can’t make the expectation that have set for myself.  I think the best I have to do let some of the things I do go and make more sacrifices.  Doing that I know will make things a heck of a lot better than they are now.  I need to finish up a couple more jobs and make them go away and start fresh.  Currently what I have on my plate is the following items:

1)  Continue to write everyday on the personal blog.  So far so good on this task.

2)  Update / rework the Photography Business website.

3)  Ship more work out there.  Get my work exposed to more people and been seen.

4)  Stop delaying on things and not be lazy.

5)  Work on lowering my debt (Financial and personal)

So those now in the open and with your encouragement, accountability, and support.  I hope to get these things out of my hair so that I can start making the changes that are needed for me to live the life that I wan to live.

Relax and Chat… Oliver the Foodie, the Friend, the Photographer

Another week has gone by once again.  If you didn’t guess today was Friday.

On the work front all is good, stress is low today it was just another day in the office.  The only thing I had to do that was out of the ordinary was that I once again had to make some modifications to the right way limits and easements that I had submitted last month.  This change was due to the comments that received from another agency that we are working with.  And since we are fast approaching our project deadline this needed to be made.

After work was completed I head over to BMW of San Diego for a checkup on my car.  Earlier in the week the check oil light came on and I thought I wasn’t due for a oil change for awhile.  But being cautious, I decided that it was best just to take it in and have it looked at.  When I arrived, I dropped off my car, handed off the keys, and headed to the waiting room.  Gosh, sounds like a hospital.  LOL.  While I was waiting there I wrote yesterday’s post on my iPhone which I find cool and interesting that I now write more than ever.  I’m still trying to get use to the fact that I don’t have a piece of paper with me all of the time but I think I can get over it.  🙂  It had been 20 minutes since my schedule appointment before the advisor saw me but arrived with good news.  The good news was that nothing was won with my car except that the fluids needed to be top off.  I asked how much that would cost and they said it free of charge.  So they took care of me there.  And while I was getting my car topped off I had a good conversation with one of the technicians there.  Having this conversation reminded of a post that I read from photographer Eric O’Connor who talked about customer service and reminded us to make it about the customer.  In my humble opinion my dealership was just doing that.

When the car was completed I headed grocery store to purchase the ingredients for dinner.  Today’s dinner was Chicken Adobe.  Chicken Adobe is one my go to dinner to make because it easy to make, no fuss, and full of flavor.  I headed to my local Vons to get the ingredients.  Once the ingredients were in hand, I headed home to start cooking.  Prep took about 5 minutes.  And then I just let it simmer for about 30 minutes.

While dinner was cooking I decided to do some work on the HOBY packages that I have been working on.  So the DVD burning began with another round of DVDs being burned.  I think I will need to find a way to work this out for a faster return because this burning of DVD one at a time is not working.

Now with dinner cooked, it being hot, and it being Friday, I figure it would be a good time to hang out with my buddy Dave and have some dessert.  So I chatted with him via the internets and decided that dessert was in the plans.  Today’s dessert was a mix of Ice Cream and Coffee.

Around 8pm, I headed over to Dave’s place to get him.  It was 8pm because we both had some work to do that we wanted to complete beforehand.  We knew that if we hung out we would chat for a couple of hours so we might as well get some work done before we head out.  When I got Dave it was decided that we would try something new that we haven’t been too or at least a place that Dave has not tried out yet.  Today’s new place was Moo Time Creamery.

Getting some Ice Cream with @davidjcrewe #hangout #foodie

Moo Time Creamery is another one of my favorite places to get ice cream in town.  All of the ice cream is just homemade and made everyday, and every flavor is seasonal.  Another reason that I like going there is that it is in Coronado.  Coronado is the typical small town American town located right in our backyard.  So when I go to Moo Time it is an opportunity to get that feeling of nostalgia.  Moo Time is definitely decorated in the 1950s ice cream parlor style.  The palor is decorated with a checkerboard pattern tile floor, old fashion soda machine with unique soda flavors, and on one wall many of the accolades that it has gotten over the years adorns one wall.  And from the ceiling hangs a kids plane rider.

Flight of fancy... #mootime

Summer Treat.. #foodie

The ice cream here comes in many varieties and you’ll have to come to see what is available.  I got the toasted Coconut and Mango Sherbet today.  I was feeling a tropical this evening.  Dave got their Double Dark Chocolate and the Coconut.  As tradition follows, I usually pick up the tab when my friends go to one of my favorite places for the first time.  After getting our Ice Cream sat and chatted for a bit.

When our Ice Cream was happily consumed we headed for part two of the evening which was coffee.  Today’s coffee stop was Cafe Vero in Mission Hills.  Coffee was a nice way to close off the evening.  With coffee in hand we grab a sit out and just chatted about all thing photography.  One of the cool things that we discussed about was that we should definitely try to get an office space for ourselves for the photography.  Which these days, i’m seriously considering more and more because I would like to up the feel and look of my photography company.  So that this point only time will tell.  Hopefully this will happen sooner than later.  We finished up around midnight and headed home.  Good times, good discussion, and a good evening.  🙂

Sip... #coffee
